Welcome to the Busy Bee Class, Lucy!!!

Today, we had a video conference with Mrs. Danen who introduced us to our new class pet!!

Meet Lucy...

Lucy lives in a barn owned by the farmers but we got to meet her today with some pictures!
Calf Information

Name of calf: Daneholm Blowtorch Lucy (Lucy)

Breed: Holstein

Ear tag#: 2889

Height: 75 cm

Weight: 46 kg

Birth/Behavior Details:  It’s a Girl!!  We are thrilled to announce the safe arrival of Daneholm Blowtorch Lucy.

It was a difficult birth, assistance was needed from Farmer Chris. (She was flipped in her mommy’s tummy, Lucy was on her back, head first rather than on her tummy, head first). Within an hour, Lucy was standing and drank 4 litres of her mother’s colostrum from a bottle. Lucy and her Momma appear healthy and happy. Lucy spent a few hours with her Momma before she joined other calves her age in our calf barn.

We learned some important things about dairy cows and how we get milk. We talked to Mrs. Danen and she shared this video with us!

Some facts we learned today were:

* Girl cows give milk. (Harper)

* The cows that give the most milk in Ontario are Holstein cows. (Ben)

* Cows give 30L of milk a day. (Kassy)

* Cows drink as much water that would be in a bathtub a day. (Morgan)

* A baby girl cow is a heifer. (Theo)

* A boy baby cow is a bull. (Isabella)

* An adult cow is about 2 years old. (Aiden)

* On Mrs. D's farm is girl cows. (Natalie)

* We drink milk so we get healthy. (Breslin)

* In milk was nutrients. (Lincoln)

After some learning and answering some questions, Mrs. D shared with us this really great parody about farming!

We can't wait to see how Lucy grows and get more updates from Mrs. D!
