Halloween Fun in Grade 1/2!

We have really enjoyed all of our Halloween activities the past couple of weeks!

Here is our Halloween Shared Reading poem:

Students will have this poem to read to you at home and complete their home activity for shared reading.

Today, we read a non-fiction book about Halloween.

We learned:
* I learned that people get candy and they say trick or treat. (Peyton)
* I learned that Halloween began more than 2000 years ago. (Aiden)
* I learned that people dressed up as ghosts and witches to scare away the real ones. (Clayton)
* I learned that people in Mexico celebrate the Day of the Dead. (Kassy)
* I learned that people wear costumes. (LJ)
* I learned that in Scotland people have to dance or tell a story or sing to get candy. (Ashton)
* I learned that Halloween was called All Hallow's Eve. (Jessica)
* I learned that sometimes Halloween can not be scary. (Isabella)
* I learned that All Hallow's Eve was a time to celebrate the harvest. (Ms. King)
* I learned that people in England and Ireland used to make jack-o-lanterns out of turnips. (Ms. King)

DPA this week, we enjoyed some Halloween dancing:

Our Estimate Jar winners!! Halloween jelly beans were shared with everyone since our friends had lots!

We were so very lucky to have Switzers donate pumpkins to decorate! We had a lot of fun painting (sorry if it stained clothes!) and decorating with different kinds of lines! We hope they made it home safe and sound to enjoy this weekend!

We also got a pumpkin to do some estimating, counting and learn with! We had lots of different estimates about how many seeds are in a pumpkin. After reading the book, 'How Many Seeds In A Pumpkin', we thought we better try their tricks and tips to estimate on our own pumpkins.

We had some Halloween themed centers this week as well to enjoy as we finished up our other important work...the students don't know these were still learning centers...shhh...don't tell!!

We finished up our day with our empathy video about Spookley the Square Pumpkin!
Not to mention ALL the treats we received today! Wow! Thank you for all the amazing things we got to share in today (& bring home!)
Enjoy this special weekend full of Halloween fun! See you Monday!
