What a fitting time of year that we learn about courage and bravery surrounding our participation in Remembrance Day.
We watched some different videos and we have read these books about Courage to build our understanding:

Following our story 'Scaredy Squirrel at Night' we responded to our reading by answering the question 'how did Scaredy Squirrel show courage in the story? We shared our ideas, in complete sentences, with out Spirit Bee Buzz groups and then a few friends were picked (using our popsicle sticks to randomly pick students) to share the answers their group came up with during their Spirit Bee discussions. This is helping students build the skills to comprehend the text and respond to the reading, thinking a little bit deeper about the context of the book. We are working on brainstorming ideas and following the reading response format RIPE.
R - restate part of the question in the answer
I - idea to answer the question
P - proof from the text where we got our idea from
E - explain how the proof supports your idea
This is really quite tricky and we are just getting started. We were happy with just making sure in our super sentence today that we had the R and the I. Something that we will work towards in making sure we have the proof to support our idea from the text which we dabbled in a little bit today.
Our shared reading poem this past week was all about showing courage. It had some big words but we got the hang of it!
Thanks for helping the Grade 1 students find some long 'e' words in the poem and the Grade 2 students write some different kinds of super sentences about what they have been learning about courage!
