Estimate Jar!

Today, we learned about estimating the number of objects that were in our Estimate Jar. Each student wrote down their estimate on their white board.

We discussed our rules for counting objects (one item at a time with one to one correspondence). We decided to be accurate, we would count each and every candy to remember those tricky teen numbers! We made up a new number for those teens and called them teny one (11), teny two (12), teny three (13) so it followed the pattern of the rest of the number families where the tens were announced and then the ones. That's why the teen numbers are so tricky because you say the ones first or have unique ones like 11 and 12!

Then for the big moment...we all took a turn going around the class and sharing our estimate. We compared numbers and how far away our estimate was from the actual total we had of candies.

Edwin was our lucky winner!!! He was two numbers off of our actual count! He was super kind to share the candies with everyone in class today!

Students are really excited to see what is going to fill our estimate jar next!
