Halloween Fun in Grade 1/2!

We have really enjoyed all of our Halloween activities the past couple of weeks!

Here is our Halloween Shared Reading poem:

Students will have this poem to read to you at home and complete their home activity for shared reading.

Today, we read some non-fiction books about Halloween.

We learned:
* I didn't know that we got the name Halloween from All Hallow's Eve. (Hannah)
* I didn't know that there could be 500 seeds in a pumpkin. (Saskia)
* I didn't know that pumpkins could be blue. (Leia)
* I didn't know that Halloween came from ancient time. (Ewan)
* I didn't know that pumpkins could be red. (Harper)
* I didn't know that people long ago thought spirits came out of the ground on Halloween. (Edwin)
* I didn't know that Hallow means saint in Old English. (Ms. King)
* I didn't know everyone celebrates Halloween all over the word. (Avaleigh)
* I didn't know the most popular costumes were witches, princesses and superheros. (Ryan)
* I didn't know that people lit fires to scare away spirits and that's how Halloween started. (Landon)
DPA this week, we enjoyed some Halloween dancing:

Our Estimate Jar winner!! Halloween ring pops were shared with everyone since our friend had lots!

We were so very lucky to have Switzers donate pumpkins to decorate! We had a lot of fun painting (sorry if stained clothes!) and decorating with different kinds of lines! We hope they made it home safe and sound to enjoy this weekend!
We also got a pumpkin to do some estimating, counting and learn with! We had lots of different estimates about how many seeds are in a pumpkin. After reading the book, 'How Many Seeds In A Pumpkin', we thought we better try their tricks and tips. Even then we were still under by over 500 seeds! Our total number of seeds, after we counted them up was 763 seeds in our class pumpkin. Some students wanted to bring some home to plant next spring to grow their very own pumpkin!

We had some Halloween themed centers this week as well to enjoy as we finished up our other important work...the students don't know these were still learning centers...shhh...don't tell!!
We finished up our day with our empathy video about Spookley the Square Pumpkin
(and a little dance party squeezed in there!)
Wishing you all a safe and happy Halloween!! See you all on Monday for a new month!!
