Today, we commemorate Remembrance Day. The Grade 1/2 class has been learning about Remembrance Day and honouring it's importance by participating in various writing, reading and art projects. Students have work posted on their individual portfolios so please check there for some of the important work they have been doing.
Our shared reading poem this week is called 'Peace is Not'. And while normally we would read a poem or sing a song during our school wide Remembrance Day ceremony, some health protocols had us completing our own individual services in our classroom.
So today, we are sharing our Remembrance Day poem together here for you all to see.
Later in the day, we had a moment of silence. Students wanted to share what they were thinking about during their moment of silence on Remembrance Day:
* I thought about soldiers that died. (Morgan)
* I thought about how the war started. (Reed)
* I thought about how they were fighting. (Natalie)
* I was thinking about how the soldiers lost their arms. (Harper)
* I thought about the soldiers that were fighting. (Lincoln)
* I thought about the animals that were in the war. (LJ)
Students have certainly acquired a lot of knowledge about Remembrance Day and the importance of it at an age appropriate level. Open the discussion up today about what they know about Remembrance Day and take a peek at their amazing writing to a soldier, their facts about Remembrance Day and their poppies they have created on their digital portfolios. I am very proud of their work this week. What a respectful, empathetic and compassionate group of Grade 1/2's!
