Halloween Fun in Grade 1!

We have really enjoyed all of our Halloween activities the past couple of weeks!

We have been reading some non-fiction texts about Halloween.

We learned:
I learned that people in England and Ireland used to make jack-o-lanterns out of turnips. (Ms. King)
* I learned that in Mexico they celebrate the dead. (Drew)
* I learned that on Halloween they dressed up as witches or ghosts. (Eden)
* I learned that they dressed up. (Nora)
* I learned that they had to tell stories to get candy. (Audrey)
* I learned that you have to say thank you and please to get your treat. (Brooke)
* I learned that Halloween was celebrated 2000 years ago. (Blane)
* I learned that Halloween was called All Hallow's Eve. (Emerson)
* I learned that a long time ago that people could play a trick or get a treat. (Reiner)
* I learned about some people go to old haunted houses with scary sound or witches laughing. (Bryson)
* I learned that on the 31st that they used to harvest the apples and plants and corn and that's why we celebrated. (Ryker)
* They would like candles or put on bonfires to scary away the witches ghosts. (Madelyn)

For DPA (Daily Physical Activity) this week, we enjoyed some Halloween dancing:

We did our October Estimate Jar today too! We have so much fun estimating, counting and seeing who our Estimate Jar winners are! Today, we practiced counting by 2's of our Halloween treats! Halloween gummies were shared with everyone since our friends had lots!

We were so very lucky to have so many pumpkin donations this year! Thank you so very much to the Switzers, Sniders and DeActis who donated pumpkins to our school! We had a lot of fun carving them with our learning buddies! We hope they made it home safe and sound to enjoy this past weekend! Also a big special thanks to the mom's (Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Narin, Mrs. Folkes and Mrs. Harrison) that came in to help us with the carving! We couldn't have done it without you!

We also got a pumpkin to do some estimating, counting and learn with! We had lots of different estimates about how many seeds are in a pumpkin. After reading the book, 'How Many Seeds In A Pumpkin', we thought we better try their tricks and tips to estimate on our own pumpkins.

We had some Halloween themed centers this week as well to enjoy as we finished up our other important work...the students don't know these were still learning centers...shhh...don't tell!!

We finished up our day with our empathy video about Spookley the Square Pumpkin!

Not to mention ALL the treats we received today! Wow! Thank you for all the amazing things we got to share in today (& bring home!)
Enjoy this special day full of Halloween fun! See you tomorrow!
