We have been learning how to measure! We used this fun cookie poster to estimate and then measure how many cookies tall we are!
However, there were some interesting observations we had! Some of us were the same amount of cookies but when we compared, we could definitely see students were NOT the same height. So what was the problem?
We found out that the cookies were NOT accurate ways to measure because not all the cookies were the same thickness. Some had chocolate chips that made them stand taller.
So we learned that we can only use items that are the same size and same shape in order to measure!
We went on a little hunt in the classroom and found these items would be much better to measure with:
Tape measures
Blocks that are the exact same size
Bingo dabbers
Markers
Hexacubes
Unifix cubes
Next, we needed to figure out some measuring rules! Here are some that we came up with:
- no spaces between measuring tools
- use a measuring tool that are the same size and same shape
- start at the start and end at the end
- its ok to be 'about' in case there is a little more or a little less
- need to include the item (unit) we used to measure
Then, we were set off for a math measuring challenge to see if we could take one measuring tool and follow our measuring rules to go and find something in the classroom about 5 units of our measuring tool. Here are some pictures from our challenge today!
