Welcome to Our Phonological Awareness Program!

As we settle into the first month of school, most of our language program aspects have now started to be embedded into a regular routine. Thank you so much for your time to read, practice high frequency sight words, letter sounds and letters with students. At school, we are implementing a daily program, as recommended by the Avon Maitland District School Board, that focuses on these early phonological awareness skills with students.

As an introduction, here is a letter to families to help build skills at home...

Every couple of weeks there will be a parent letter and some information posted about reminders for our program.

This week's focus is letter sounds (other wise known as phonemes - the smallest unit of sound in the English language).

As you have seen, I have sent home letter sound practice for students with a parent resource of how to form the sounds. Here is a video that helps with some of the tricksters that some of us may not have even realized when we practice! You will need to click to watch on youtube but it is a quick and worthwhile little video to help understand some common misconceptions about letter sounds! **You may need to watch on youtube so click the link available**

Here is a little video to demonstrate the alphabet of the letter sounds. Of course there are also some more letter sounds that are diagraphs, blends and teams (meaning more than one letter put together) but this is where we are starting to really reinforce the letter sounds and recognize the letter association.

A reminder to practice the letter sound ring as often as you can with your child to recognize the letter/letter sounds. As students know them instantly, please put a checkmark on the back of the card. Once each card on the ring has 10 checkmarks, please write a note in the child's planner for me to pull the ring out to check the letter sounds with the student. If mastered, the student will be rewarded for their hard work and given their next five letter sounds to work on. We will continue this little routine this school year and celebrate their success!

Thank you for your continued support at home to support our little learners! These skills are essential for reading and writing success!

  1. Thank you for sharing these videos. I think it will be very helpful with sounding out words while reading.
