Last week, we were learning about the spelling patterns of tch making the /ch/ sound and dge making the /j/ sound. We learned that these have to happen right after a short vowel sound.
This week, we have been learning a couple different about spelling patterns: long vowel sounds followed by two consonants and when the letter y makes the long /i/ sound in a one syllable word.
Let's learn a little more:
LONG VCC
There are some tricky word endings that change the sound of the vowel in words:
- ild spells with a long /i/ sound like in the word wild, child, mild
- ind often spells with a long /i/ sound like in the word mind, blind, kind
- old spells with a long /o/ sound like in the word told, bold, cold, gold
- olt often spells with a long /o/ sound like in the word bolt. colt, holt
- ost often spells with a long /o/ sound like in the word host, most, post
We call these long vcc words (long vowel sound with two consonants to follow).
In this week's text called The Gold Rush, students are looking for all the words that have these special long vowel followed by two consonants. (ie. wild, gold, old, etc). Please don't get tricked by vowels that are making short vowel sounds and followed by two consonants (ie. west, back, etc).
Letter Y Making The Long /i/ Sound
This is the letter Yy. We have learned that the consonant sound for Yy after a lot of practice like in the words yes or yellow. Yy can also have a vowel sound. When the letter Yy comes at the end of a one syllable word, it spells long /i/ like at the end of the words my, fry, try.
In this week's text called Plane Race, students are looking for all the words that have the y at the end of the one syllable word making the long /i/ sound (ie. fly, sky, try, etc). Please don't get tricked by vowels that are not making the long /i/ sound (ie. they).
Next week, we are going to learn about how Yy can also make the long /e/ sound at the end of two-syllable words. Yy has many jobs...
