Stuffies for Sale!

One of our generous Busy Bee friends, Zoe, decided she would like to gift her friends a stuffie from her personal collection. Since we have been learning about money, Mrs. Herbert decided to have a stuffie sale! With a few more stuffies gathered up to ensure there was a choice for all our friends, Mrs. Herbert priced each stuffie with a little price tag. Students have been eyeing these up all week to know which one they may want to 'buy' with their play money from the classroom. We have been working hard to skip count and been putting our skills to the test lately to count money and ways to make various money amounts.

Today was the lucky day for our Stuffie Sale! We were ready to shop! Students names were pulled at random to select the stuffie they wanted to 'buy'. They worked hard to pull coins from their collection to add up to the value of their stuffie cost.

So don't be surprised if a stuffie came home today! We thank Zoe and Mrs. Mohr for their generous donations to our stuffie store to make learning fun and get an extra special memory of learning in Grade 1 and 2.

Students are working hard to learn the names and values of the coins and bills. Our focus thus far, has been just the coins and total values of collections up to 100cents or $1. Soon, we will be expanding our knowledge as Grade 2's are learning how to count coins up to 200cents/$2.00 and bills up to $200.

A great way to support learning at home is to have your child practice identifying the coins and bills, naming the their values and start to count, focusing on the difference between cents and dollars with counting small collections of coins. In Grade 1, stick to the same coin and skip counting rather than using different values of coins just to get the hang of it! Students have been so engaged in our financial literacy activities...they soon will be expert little shoppers (& hopefully savers!)

Happy shopping!
