We are becoming stronger readers each week! We are learning all about letter sounds, spelling patterns and how syllables can help us with our reading! When we read bigger words, we can see how chunking the word into syllables helps rather than stretching out each sound since we are getting really good at that in smaller words.
This past week, we have been learning about open and closed syllables!
Open Syllable - is a syllable in a word that making a long vowel sound (it's own name) and that ends the syllable.
Short Syllable - is a syllable in a word that has a short vowel sound because it is followed by a consonant.
For example:
open - this word has two syllables o-pen
The first syllable is the long vowel sound and then second syllable is pen which is closed because the vowel is followed by a consonant.
The story that students has brought home this week were called The Rocket Contest and Music Class.
In The Rocket Contest, students are looking for all the words that have two closed syllables in the word (ie. rocket, Denzel, Edwin, etc).
In the story called Music Clas, students are looking for all the words that have an open AND closed syllable in the word ( ie. music, secret, pretend, frozen, begin, etc).
Happy Reading!!
